JEJAK PULANG

Without its mother an immature orangutan is lost. In our programme, we help rescued orangutan orphans find their way again and return home to their natural habitat.

Vision

A planet inhabited equally by human and non-human primates, where tropical rainforest ecosystems can survive for the long-term.

Mission
  • Rehabilitate orangutans affected by human activities, both physically and psychologically, and return them to an independent life in their natural habitat.
  • Protect orangutan habitat by integrating local wisdom and modern life in harmony with nature.

A holistic approach

We rehabilitate orangutan orphans and bring them back into their natural habitat – the rain forest. To keep the orangutans safe, we protect not only them but also their forest habitat. In this way orangutans become protectors of all living beings in their habitat.

Science and application

Our work is scientifically informed by using knowledge from various disciplines. We collect empirical data to monitor rehabilitation progress and reintroduction success. Our results feed back into the pool of scientific knowledge about orangutans and their environment.

Integrating animal welfare and conservation

We align rehabilitation with the natural orangutan child development and allow each individual to develop at its own pace. Only competent adolescent orangutans are reintroduced to their natural habitat. We allow them to gain independence from human care gradually.

Orangutan Pedagogy

The orphans are immersed into a forest 12-24/7. Our 'orangutanised' caregivers model survival-relevant skills and act as safe base, forming bonds with individual orphans. By implementing a strict non-contact policy for all humans not involved in care, the orphans learn not to trust humans indiscriminately.

OUR PARTNERS

The work we do is only possible thanks to the help of our great partner organisations

The Natural Resources Conservation Center (BKSDA) has several tasks including the management of nature conservation parks and nature reserve forests. Moreover, the BKSDA is also responsible for the use of the development and protection of natural resources.
FOUR PAWS is an international animal welfare organisation that advocates for a world where humans treat animals with respect, empathy and understanding. It is the main donor of Yayasan Jejak Pulang.
